We add value to various kinds of raw farm yield by crafting them into products which are ready and relevant for daily use. A membership in a cooperative that processes farm produce is also one of the ways we add value to the farmer and/or the investor.
It is worth adding value because:
Such products give you a greater chance to set your price instead of being given it on a take-it-or-leave-it basis
Processed goods give greater flexibility in marketing and storing
By processing we can extend your selling season
By processing we can extend shelf life
This way, the raw yield is turned into a final product which is appealing and as a result, it is more profitable
Finally, let’s remind ourselves that a farm yields are almost valueless unless we process them to add value to them
“Value-added” means adding value to a raw product by taking it to, at least, the next stage of production. Value can be added through membership in a cooperative that processes farm produce or adding value may be as elaborate as going all the way to the consumer with a “case-ready” food product.
